Open Cycle

The company OPEN Cycle was founded in 2012 by Andy Kessler and Gérard Vroomen. Both had been working for big bike companies for a long time, Andy Kessler as managing director at BMC, Gérard Vroomen as co-founder and designer at Cérvelo. After both had run large companies, they were ready for something new. The motto “working hard to stay small” says it all about OPEN Cycle. The focus on developing bikes for themselves and like-minded people that are fun and enjoyable.

U.P.

Right from the start, Open has chosen carbon as the frame material for all its models, as weight is high on Andy and Gérard’s agenda. The frame of the Open U.P. weighs just 1040 grams. If you want to ride the bike with 650b wheels, you can fit a full 2.1″ mountain bike tyre, classic 28 inch tyres fit up to 40mm through the frame and fork. If you want, you can also use a 30mm road tyre and have a light, agile road bike for trips on the asphalt.

WI.DE.

The new WI.DE. (Winding Detours) offers, as the name promises, a particularly high degree of tyre freedom. Many riders ride on wide 2.25 inch tyres in winter to have more safety in bad weather. To go fully with the trend, Open widens the fork and chainstay considerably. Up to 2.4 inch wide tyres can be fitted in the Wide. The frame is optimised for 650b wheelsets, but wheels with a 700C rim also fit in the monstercross bike. Both chainstays on the Open WI.DE. are offset downwards. According to Open co-founder and developer Gerard Vroomen, this creates a very efficient box structure for the monostay behind the bottom bracket. It increases the bottom bracket stiffness, reduces the weight and gives the frame even more tyre clearance. In addition, the WI.DE. is optimised for 1x drivetrains only.
